MBCC Under 13's Stags v Slough - County Cup QF - 20th June
02 Jul
We were drawn against our arch rivals, Slough in the QF of the County Cup. Having beaten them earlier in the league fixture this return fixture was never going to be an easy one and Slough would undoubtedly bring a much stronger side. Nonetheless, on paper we boasted a strong balanced side with more than half the team either a County or District player we were as ready as we could be.
Slough won the toss and elected to bat. Once again our attack was spearheaded by the trusted pair of Nishil and Kabir. In the very first over Sloughs opener, a County U12, was trapped playing back to a straight from Nishil .LBW given, Slough 0-1, what a start. Kabir continued the next conceding just 2. Slough now had both District players at the crease and getting through either would really mount the pressure on the opposition. Up stepped Nishil and sent both his fellow District players back to the pavilion in consecutive overs. His third wicket was the pick of them, a late off cutter that took the middle stump off Sloughs in form skipper, Pavinder.
In their first 5 overs, Nishil had ripped through the top order and Slough were 17-3. We were on top and we now needed to finish off the middle order. Cricket is a funny old game they say and Sloughs #4 bat looked to take the game away from us, smashing 17 off one over from Kabir. He really did look a good bat and seemed to find the middle with ease. In the next 5 overs, Slough piled on 38 runs and were 55-3. Eventually the top bat retired at 30* with slough very much in control and at 15 overs they had raced on to 74-4.
Our challenge was to restrict them to under 100 and so some fine tight bowling from Jai and George was just what we needed. Slough ended with a very respectable 94 with Nishil bowling 4-14.
So, it came down to getting ~5/over from the word go. Ben Ward and Todd were given clear instructions to push the rate along right from the start and did putting on a healthy 24-0 after 5 overs. The momentum was with us and we looked to capitalise on that. Cricket is a funny old game they say and so it proved once more as we lost Todd, Sean and George in quick succession adding only 5 more, MBCC at 29-3. I would say George was unlucky to be given LBW as I thought he was quite a bit down the wicket and it seemed to hit him high up. Ben Hooper joined in and was unusually cautious, perhaps a sign of the pressure we were under. At the half way mark we were a slow 37-3, needing over 6/over. The 11th over was tidy with 2 conceded and run rate jumped to 7/over. Something had to give and cricket is a funny old game they say. Ben Hooper cut lose and with B Ward took 11 & 8 in next 2 overs. With 5 over left we were 67, still needing 5/over. This was achievable with both Bens at the crease. Unfortunately, Ben Hooper was bowled and Ben Ward habitually retired on 30* soon.
With two new batsman, Nishil & Jai, the game was still very much in the balance. However, with some good running between the wickes and clever, sensible batting MBCC came home in the 18th over, making it through to the finals.
Our fielding was below par and could have cost us dearly defending such a low score. The one exception was Tom Buckle who was outstanding fielding in the deep compensating for the rest by saving at least 10 runs, well done Tom.
Congratulations to the U13 Stags, this was an extremely pressured game and the dominance swung no more than 4 times during the game, making it a very enjoyable yet tense game to watch. I am sure our lads gained experience plating under pressure, something they will need on the latter stages of any competition.
