MBCC U13's Girls v Abbots Langley in the Lady Taverners Cup
Posted by: Huw Buckle
Match Day: Sun Apr 27 2014 | Start Time: 01:30: PM | Venue: Away
Type of Game: Cup
U13 73/7 - Abbots Langley 74/6
Performance of the Day: Teona Goodge 56
For the second year running, our U13 Girls lost an absolute
classic in the Lady Taverners Cup – this time by one wicket. Last year they
lost off the last ball, by one run.
The Lady Taverners U13 Cup is an ECB national competition,
played 8-a-side, hard ball, over 20 overs each. This year, we were drawn away
for our first match, versus Abbotts Langley, Herts. The match was played at
Langleybury C.C. Normal cricket rules were applied – despite the manager’s
attempt to confuse everybody with rules and directions!
We haven’t even started training yet, so the game came very
early for the Girls. Although it is an U13 competition, we had a mix of U13 and
U11s, and they all did extremely well. The 8 girls representing us were:
Teona Goodge, Hannah Cooke, Adele Thomas, Katy Brewster,
Catherine Child, Eleri Hickson, Julia Hickson and captain Susannah Ames.
With the weather situation it was a concern the match would
be either postponed or curtailed (dreaded Duckworth Lewis!), but happily the
rain held off and we had a full match.
Susannah lost the toss (yet again!) and we were asked to
bat. Teona & Hannah opened the batting. The pitch was difficult and the
bowling accurate. Hannah was out, bowled going for a big whack, in the second
over. Susannah soon followed and we struggled through to 14-2 off 5 overs.
Teona then found her range with 3 fours in the next over and, along with Adele
and Katy, we moved to 67-4 off 13 overs. Eleri and Catherine were out quickly
and Teona was finally out in the 15
th over, leaving Julia not out.
We finished all out for 73.
Let’s now talk about Teona’s innings. Over the winter she
was selected for the main Berkshire County U13 side, which is a brilliant
achievement. Today she showed why she thoroughly deserved this achievement. She
batted for 15 overs with real maturity. She played a beautiful straight bat to
any straight ball and, patiently saw in her eye, and then played controlled
shots all around the ground. She hit 7 fours and scored a total of 56 runs (out
of 73!). A superb innings.
Catherine opened the bowling and took a wicket with the
second ball. A good start, but the Abbotts Langley girls then put on some good partnerships.
At 60-3 off 13 overs, the match looked lost, but some great fielding saw a run
out and then Teona showed her bowling ability with 2 wickets in her fourth over
and suddenly, at 64-6, it was match on – just one more wicket needed. A very
hard catch went flying to Katy, but she couldn’t quite get it to stick. And
they say catches win matches! Sadly it wasn’t to be and we lost by the one
wicket off the last ball of the 18
th over. Teona (2-15) and
Catherine (1-13) were the pick of the bowlers, with Hannah also taking a wicket
and two run-outs. We fielded well and supported each other. Susannah kept
wicket and captained the team expertly.
The girls did brilliantly and were a real credit to the
club.Key learnings are to bat through
the whole innings (if we could have batted another 3 of the remaining 5 overs
we probably would have won); keep down the wides and no balls (31 for M&B
versus 11 for AL); look for some quick singles and be a bit more vocal.
A disappointing start to lose our first match, but a very
encouraging one for the season. It bodes very well.
Skipper Armstrong was blissfully unaware of the forecast for…
